** Preparing the Pieces
and Sewing the Block ** |
|
|
First cut the Color 1 2-1/2" x 5" strip into two
2-1/2" squares. Cut the Color 1 4-7/8" square in half
diagonally to make two half square triangles. You will only need one
for this block. Cut one trunk section
from the Color 1 4" square using the template provided. Cut the
Color 1 2-7/8" x 5-3/4" strip into two 2-7/8"
squares. Stack these and cut them once on the diagonal to make four
half square triangles...

Next cut the Color 2 4-7/8" square in half diagonally to
make two half square triangles. Then cut the Color 2 4-1/2"
x 9" strip into two 4-1/2" squares. Cut the Color 2
2-1/2" x 5" strip into two 2-1/2" squares. Cut the Color 2
1-7/8 square, cut just a tiny hair on the generous side, into two half
square triangles. ( You may use the tiny square template if you
prefer!) ...

Next speed piece the half squares, by
stacking the Color 1 and Color 2 2-7/8" x 17-1/4"
strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the
top strip, lightly mark the 2-7/8" square lines and mark the
diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew a SCANT 1/4"
above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines.
Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 2-7/8" square
lines. This will give you twelve half squares. Press seam allowances
towards the darker fabric. Trim these back to measure 2-1/2" if
needed...

To make the block's upper left and lower right units sew Color 1
2-7/8" half square triangles to the left and top of a 2-1/2"
half square, using a scant 1/4" seam allowance. Press seams
towards triangles. Add a Color 2 4-7/8" half square
triangle, again using a scant 1/4" seam. Press seam towards Color
2 addition. Trim this unit to measure 4-1/2" if needed. Make two
units like this...on to Page 2!
