Now sew one of the Color 3 rectangles to one side of a four patch square; press seam allowance towards the four patch. Sew a Color 3 rectangle with Color 4 square attached to the adjacent side, as shown. Press seam allowance towards the rectangle. Make four of these...

 

Next, align a Color 1   2" square atop one end of a Color 4 rectangle, right sides together; mark the diagonal on the square, and sew along the marked line. Trim off the excess seam allowance. Sew another square on the other end using the same method, and sewing the diagonal seam in the same direction. Make four of these, then make four more of these units with the slant going in the opposite direction. Press all seam allowances towards the Color 1 squares...

Then sew pairs of the previous Color1/Color4 rectangles together along one long edge, again using a scant 1/4" seam. Press seam allowance down. Make four of these...

Now, piece the block, first by row, and then by joining rows to make the block. Press seam allowances in alternating directions by row...
