This makes a 14" block, and is shown here with a bit of a twist, as the background is split, doesn't need to be though!!

** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

First cut your background Color 1 and Color 2   2-1/2" x 17-1/2" strips into seven 2-1/2" squares each, using a rotary cutter.....

Next cut the print 2-1/2" x 10" strips into four 2-1/2" squares each. You will need four different prints for each block's "paws" (or four the same, if that is more to your liking)...

Start by speed piecing your half squares. In this case since we have two different background colors, one set of half squares will use the first background color, another set will use the second. Stack a print 2-7/8" x 5-3/4" strip atop a Color 1 strip of the same size, right sides together and with all edges aligned. Mark the 2-7/8" square line, and mark the diagonals in the direction shown as well. Now sew a scant 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square line. Now cut apart on the marked diagonals, and on the square line. Repeat this with the opposing calico and the Color 2 background strip. Press to dark side and trim these each to measure 2-1/2" if needed...

Two of the paws will have two half squares with one background color, and two with the other background color. To do this, follow the same directions as above, using one square of each calico with one of each background color. Press to dark side and trim these each to measure 2-1/2" if needed...

Lastly, stack and align the two background 2-7/8" squares. Mark the diagonal. Stitch 1/4" away on both sides of the marked line, and cut apart on the marked line. Press to dark side and trim these each to measure 2-1/2" if needed...on to Page 2!
