This makes a 12" block and is from the early 1930's!

** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block ** 

Mark and cut the Color 1  1-1/2" x 13" strip into two 1-1/2" x 6-1/2" strips. Mark and cut the Color 1  1-1/2" x 10" strip into four 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" strips. Mark and cut the Color 1  1-1/2" x 17" strip into two 1-1/2" x 8-1/2" strips...

Now mark and cut the Color 2  5" x 17" strip into four 2-1/2" x 8-1/2" rectangles. Mark and cut the Color 2 1-1/2" x 18" strip into four 1-1/2" x 4-1/2" strips. Mark and cut the Color 2  1-1/2" x 12" strip into eight 1-1/2" squares...

Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 2  2-7/8" x 5-3/4" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2- 7/8" square line and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 2-7/8" square lines. This will give you four half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. These should measure 2-1/2" ...

Now we'll start construction the block! Sew Color 1  1-1/2" x 2-1/2" strips to the left and right of the Color 2  2-1/2" square, using a 1/4" seam and pressing to the darker side...

 Sew Color 2  1-1/2" squares to each end of the remaining two Color 1 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" strips, pressing those towards the dark side... 

Now sew the two pieced strips we just made to the center square unit...

Now sew two Color 2 squares to the ends of two Color 2  4-1/2" strips, pressing seams to the center...on to Page 2!
