This makes a 12" block, comes from the early 1940's, and I offer a paper piecing option as well as regular piecing !

** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

For each block, cut THREE (only two shown) random navy/blue 5-1/4" squares. Cut these on both diagonals to get four quarter square triangles from each. Also, cut THREE white/ background 5-1/4" squares into quarter square triangles. Cut NINE 2-7/8" (2 shown) white /background squares and cut them each in half to make half square triangles. Also cut NINE random blue 2-7/8" squares and make half squares. If you prefer make six copies of the PP template and skip all this cutting) ...

To make the geese, sew white half square triangles to the blue quarter square triangles in a 1/4" seam. Press to dark sides. These should measure 2-1/2" x 4-1/2". Do the same with white quarter square triangles and blue half square triangles...
 Sew three rows as shown at left. Join the rows to complete the block!...on to Page 2!
