** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Cut the Color 1  4-7/8" square in half once on the diagonal to make two medium half square triangles. Using the template provided, cut one pentagon from the Color 1 4" square. Cut the Color 1 2-1/2" x 12-1/2" strip into five 2-1/2" squares. Cut one Color 1  2-7/8" x 8-5/8" strip into three 2-7/8" squares. Stack these and cut them once on the diagonal to make six small half square triangles...

Now cut the Color 3  4-1/2" x 9" strip into two 4-1/2" squares. Cut the Color 3  6-7/8" square in half once on the diagonal to make two large half square triangles. Cut the Color 3  4-7/8" square in half once on the diagonal to make two medium half square triangles-you only need one for this block. Cut the Color 3  3-1/4" square in half on both diagonals to make four quarter square triangles-you only need two for this block...

Stack the Color 1 and Color 3  2-7/8" x 8-5/8" strips right sides together and all edges aligned. Mark the 2-7/8" square lines, then draw in the diagonals as shown at top left. Next sew 1/4" on each side of the drawn diagonal lines, pivoting at the square lines. Cut apart on the square lines and on the drawn diagonals between the rows of stitching. This will give you six half squares. Press seams to darker side. These should measure 2-1/2". Repeat this procedure with a Color 2 and Color 3  2-7/8" x 17-1/4" strip set to get twelve half square in that color arrangement. Trim those to 2-1/2" also, if needed...
