** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by cutting the Color 1  4-1/2" x 18" strip into four 4-1/2" squares. Next cut the Color 1  2-1/2" x 18" strip into four 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles. Then cut the Color 1  2-1/2" x 10" strip into four 2-1/2" squares...

Now cut the Color 2  5" x 18" strip into eight 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles. Cut the Color 2  5" x 10" strip into eight 2-1/2" squares...

Next cut the Color 3  4-1/2" x 22-1/2" strip into five 4-1/2" squares. Then cut the Color 3  5" x 20" strip into sixteen 2-1/2" squares...

To make the side units, place a Color 3 small square right sides together atop the upper left corner of a Color 1 large square, with outer edges aligned. On the back of the top square lightly mark the diagonal. Sew on this diagonal marking. Cut off the excess seam allowance. Press the remainder towards the corner. Repeat this with another Color 3 square on the opposing corner of the square, and then on the two adjacent corners. Make four of these units. These should measure 4-1/2" square at this point. Sew Color 2 rectangles to opposing sides of each unit...on to Page 2!
