The first thing that I would recommend that you do, is go to the Practice Paper Piecing Page.  When you feel comfy with paper piecing, come on back and try a State of Maine Block! You will need to print out one copy of  the template A and C pages and two copies of the template B page per block you want to make on very lightweight paper.

After your units are paper pieced, sew together the uneven nine patch center unit, then using the template C provided, cut four triangles to sew to it's edges. Press seams towards triangles. Now piece the block, by sewing top and bottom row pieces together,  the two side pieces to the center unit...and join those rows!

Here are four blocks by five, with a narrow plain sashing and narrow border. Play around with this one some...do the "tree stems" in different colors...or add yet another color to the "Stars"  formed by the side unit triangles....I think you'll find it's quite versatile!

Happy Quilting All!
