This makes a 10" block and is part paper piecing, part regular piecing!

The first thing that I would recommend that you do, is go to the Practice Paper Piecing Page.  When you feel comfy with paper piecing, come on back and try a Stars Block! You will need to print out one copy of the template page per block you want to make on very lightweight paper.

** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by cutting the Color 1  2-1/2" x 10" strip into four 2-1/2" squares. Then cut the Color 3  5" x 10" strip into eight 2-1/2" squares...

Now speed piece the half squares by stacking the Color 2 and Color 3  2-7/8" x 5-3/4" strips right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2-7/8" square line and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square line. Now cut apart on the marked diagonals, and on the 2-7/8" square line. This will give you four half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. These should measure 2-1/2"...

Next paper piece the four center units. Sew them together. Sew pre-joined Color 3 and Color 1 strips to the left and right of the center unit. Make top and bottom rows as shown at left, and sew to the top and bottom of the block, and it's all finished! Congratulations on another block well done! :o)
