** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by cutting the Color 1  4-1/2" x 18" strip into four 4-1/2" squares. Cut the Color 2  4-1/2" x 22-1/2" strip into five 4-1/2" squares...

Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 2  4-7/8" x 29-1/4" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 4-7/8" square lines and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 4-7/8" square lines. This will give you twelve half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. These should measure 4-1/2"...

Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 2  5-1/4" x 10-1/2" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 5-1/4" square line and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines.

Now cut apart ON the  5-1/4" square lines. Use a ruler and rotary cutter to cut each of the two squares in half on the OPPOSITE diagonal from the one you just sewed on.  Now cut each of the resultant triangles on the DRAWN lines (not shown)...to get many pieced triangles. Press seams to darker sides. Sew them together in pairs to make four quarter square units. These should measure 4-1/2"...
