** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Cut the Color 1  1-1/2" x 13-1/2" strip into nine 1-1/2" squares...

Then cut the Color 2  1-1/2" x 3" strip into two 1-1/2" squares. Cit the Color 2  3-1/2" x 14" strip into four 3-1/2" squares...

Now stack the Color 1 and Color 2  1-7/8" x 15" strips with all edges aligned. Cut this at 1-7/8" intervals to make eight squares of each color. Keep the squares together in pairs and on the back of the top square lightly draw in the diagonal as shown at left in the enlargement Then sew 1/4" on each side of the drawn line. Cut apart ON the drawn line between the rows of stitching. Each square-pair will give you two half square units. Press seams to darker sides. These should measure 1-1/2". You will have a total of sixteen half square units...

Next sew the two Color 1 and one Color 2  1-1/2" x 9" strips together as shown at left, using a 1/4" seam (now and throughout the block making) Cut this apart at 1-1/2" intervals to make six pieced units...on to Page 2!
