** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by marking and cutting the Color 1  7-1/2" x 15" rectangle into eighteen 2-1/2" squares...

Then mark and cut the Color 2  5" x 12-1/2" rectangle into ten 2-1/2" squares...

Now speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 2  2-7/8" x 11-1/2" strips right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip lightly mark the 2-7/8" square lines. Mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals. Cut apart on the square lines, and on the diagonal lines between the rows of stitching. This will give you eight half squares. Press the seams towards the darker fabric. These should measure 2-1/2"...

Then just piece the block, following the diagram at left for placement and orientation of your squares and half squares!

Wasn't THAT a nice and easy one!? :o) Rumor has it that the REAL Road to California was a bit Rockier!
