** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by marking and cutting the Color 1  2-1/2" x 20" strip into eight 2-1/2" squares...

Next mark and cut the Color 4  2-1/2" x 10" strip into four 2-1/2" squares...

Now mark and cut the Color 5  2-1/2" x 30" strip into twelve 2-1/2" squares...

Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 2 and Color 4  2-7/8" x 17-1/4" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2-7/8" square lines and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew a 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 2-7/8" square lines. This will give you twelve half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. These should measure 2-1/2" . Repeat this whole process with the other two Color 2 and Color 4  2-7/8" x 17-1/4" strips to get twelve more half squares in that color combination. Do the same thing with a Color 3 and Color 4  2-7/8" x 11-1/2" strips, and one more time with a Color 1 and Color 4  2-7/8" x 11-1/2" strips, to get eight half squares of each color combination...
