** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by marking and cutting the Color 1  2-1/2" x 10" strip into four 2-1/2" squares...

Next mark and cut the Color 2  1-1/2" x 7-1/2" strip into five 1-1/2" squares...

Then mark and cut the Color 3  3" x 9" strip into four 1-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles. Mark and cut the Color 3  1-1/2" x 10" strip into four 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" rectangles. Mark and cut the Color 3  1-1/2" x 6" strip into four 1-1/2" squares...

Now speed piece the half squares by stacking the Color 1 and Color 3  2-7/8" x 11-1/2" strips, right sides together, marking the 2-7/8" square lines, marking the diagonals in the directions shown at left, and then sewing 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the 2-7/8" square lines.  Cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and cut apart on the square lines as well. This will give you eight half squares. Press seams to darker side. These should measure 2-1/2" ...

Sew together four pairs of Color 2/Color 3 small squares, using 1/4" seam allowance, and pressing seams towards the darker side. Sew Color 3 short rectangles to the tops of the square-pairs...two in each orientation shown at left...on to Page 2!
