** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Using six graduated tones of blue( or some other color family would work fine too!) cut one strip of each in the lengths shown at left....

Speed piece the half squares by stacking the Color 1 and Color 4  2-7/8" x 5-3/4" strips right sides together. On the back of the top strip, draw in the 2-7/8" square line, then draw in the diagonals as shown at left. Now sew a SCANT 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square line. Cut apart on the square line and on the marked diagonals between the rows of stitching. This will give you four half squares. Press seams to darker side. Trim these back to measure 2-1/2" if needed...

Make the block's center nine patch by joining the half squares we just made, with one 2-1/2" red square, and four 2-1/2" cream squares, using all scant 1/4" seams. This unit should measure 6-1/2" square when finished...on to Page 2!
