** Preparing the Pieces
and Sewing the Block ** |
Start by marking and cutting the Color 3 3-7/8" x
15-1/2" strip into four 3-7/8" squares. Stack and cut these
once on the diagonal to make eight half square triangles...
Next speed piece the half
squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 2 3-7/8" x
7-3/4" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On
the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 3 7/8" square line
and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting
at the square lines. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on
the 3-7/8" square line. This will give you four half squares.
Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. These should
measure 3-1/2" . Repeat this with a Color 1 and Color
3 3-7/8" x 7-3/4" strip set to make four more
in that color combo... |
Then stack the Color 1 and Color 2 4-1/4" x
8-1/2" strips right sides together and all edges aligned. Mark the
4-1/4" square line, then on the back of the
top strip, lightly mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left.
Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals,
pivoting at the square lines. Now cut apart on the square line. Using
a ruler cut each square apart on the opposite diagonal from the way
you sewed, then cut each resulting triangle apart on the drawn line
between the lines of your original stitching...
This will give you four each of the pieced
quarter square triangles shown at left. Press seams to the darker
side...
Sew each quarter square triangle to a Color 3 half square triangle,
using a 1/4" seam, and pressing seams to one side...
