** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by cutting the Color 1 3-7/8" x 15-1/2" strip into four 3-7/8" squares...

Using the circle template provided cut one circle from the Color 2 5" square...

Cut the Color 3 3-7/8" x 15-1/2" strip into four 3-7/8" squares. Cut the Color 3 3-1/2" x 14" strip into four 3-1/2" squares...

Place a Color 1 and Color 3 3-7/8" square right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top square lightly draw the diagonal. Stitch 1/4" away from the drawn line on both sides of it. Cut apart on the drawn line. This will give you two half squares. press seams to darker side. Trim to measure 3-1/2" if needed. Repeat this with all the Color 1 and Color 3 3-7/8" squares to get a total of eight half squares...

Now you have a choice to make about how you would like to do your block center! To REVERSE APPLIQUE ..crease to find the center then turn the Color 3 6-1/2" square over so the wrong side of the fabric is on top. Use the circle template to trace a circle in the center. Cut out 1/4" INSIDE the drawn circle to make a circular hole in that square. Flip the square so it is right side up. Center the Color 2 circle underneath with it's right side up also. Turn under the edges of the Color 3 inner circle hole and hand or machine applique to the Color 2 circle underneath using thread to match the square... OR...

If you prefer you can applique the circle on TOP of the Color 2 square... ( Don't cut out the center circle if you are using this method!)...by machine or by hand... OR... you can rough edge applique the circle on! (To do that, cut OFF the 1/4" seam allowance on the Color 2 circle, and just place it on the center of the Color 3 square. Machine stitch it to the square 1/4" away from the edge of the circle.) This will get fray-y edges over time! ... on to Page 2!
