** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Cut the Color 1 and Color 2  2-1/2" x 20" strips into eight 2-1/2" squares of each...

Next cut the Color 3  4-1/2" x 40-1/2" strip into nine 4-1/2" squares. Cut the Color 3  2-1/2" x 18" strip into four 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles...

Then cut the Color 1 and Color 3  2-7/8" x 28-3/4" strips into ten 2-7/8" squares of each. Pair these right sides together and all outer edges aligned. On the back of the top square lightly draw in the diagonal, then sew 1/4" away on each side of the drawn line. Cut apart ON the drawn line and press seam allowances to the darker side. These should measure 2-1/2" . Make twenty of these half squares...

Now using a 1/4" seam allowance piece together the units shown at left from the half squares we just made...

Place a Color 1  2-1/2" square right sides together atop the upper left corner of a Color 3  4-1/2" square, with outer edges aligned. ( I show them staggered here just so you can see what I mean) On the back of the top square, lightly draw the diagonal, then sew ON this diagonal line. Cut off the excess seam allowance, and press the remainder towards the outer triangle. Repeat this with a Color 2 square on the opposing corner. Then repeat the same procedure with a Color 1 square on the upper right corner and a Color 2 square on the lower left corner, pressing the seams again towards the corners. Make four of these units...on to Page 2!
