Kids Can Quilt!!

Lets move on from the holiday patterns now to one that is just standard piecing! This makes a 12 inch heart block!

***Parents and/or teachers...note that not all children... nor all age groups are good with rotary cutters!...You may want to help with that part!

Cut your pieces according to the following:

From your heart fabric, cut one strip that measures  3-1/2" by 21"...cut this strip apart at 3-1/2" intervals. These will be the full squares of this color.

From your background fabric, cut one strip that measures  3-1/2" by 7"...cut this strip apart at 3-1/2" intervals. These will be the full squares of this color.

Then cut one strip of each color that measures 3-7/8"x 15-1/2". Lay the two strips one atop the other, with right sides together, and with all edges lined up. On the back side of the top strip lightly mark a line at each 3-7/8th inch point. (shown as a dotted line in the picture at left). Next lightly draw a line from the top left corner, down to the opposite corner... then from there UP to the next corner...then down to the next, and up to the upper right corner. Now mark 1/4 inch away from those diagonal lines...on both sides of it! Now sew...in one line from the upper left corner along the 1/4 inch line...down, up down and up to the upper right corner. Next sew on the other 1/4 inch line. When this is done, cut the blocks apart on the 3-7/8th inch marks...and on the solid diagonal lines between the 1/4" sewing lines. This will give you eight half squares.

This block gets pieced by rows. To make row 1...place two half squares right sides together so that both slants are the same, going from the lower left to the upper right. Sew, using a 1/4" seam, down the right side of the square. Press seam to the left. Add another half square, with its right side against the right side of the square you just added and edges lined up. The slant of the top square will be in the opposite direction, going from top left to bottom right. Sew, and press to the left. Add a fourth half square in the same way. The slant of this last one will be going from the lower left to the upper right. You will now have the two top peaks of the heart.

To make Row 2, place two heart fabric squares right sides together and all edges lined up. Sew down the right side, using a 1/4" seam again. Press seam towards the right. Add three more heart squares in the same way, pressing ALL seams to the right.

To Make Row 3, lay a half square down with the slant going from upper left to lower right. Atop this, with right sides together and all edges lined up, place a heart fabric square. Sew down the right side with a 1/4" seam. Press seam to the left. Add another heart fabric square. Press seam to the left. Next add another half square, by laying it atop the last square you added...right sides together, with the slant going from the upper left to the lower right. Sew down the right side, and press the seam towards the left.

To make Row 4,lay a background square down. Atop that, with right sides together, edges lined up, and the slant going from lower left to upper right. Sew down the right side with  a 1/4" seam. Press seam towards the right. Add another half square, with right sides together, edges lined up, and slant going from the upper left to the lower right. Sew down the right side, and press seam towards the right. Add another background square, right sides together, edges lined up. Sew down the right side. Press seam to the right.

Now sew Row 2 to Row 1.Lay Row 1 down, and place Row 2 atop it, with right sides together and all edges lined up. Sew along the bottom edge, using a 1/4" seam. Press seam towards the top row.

Then sew Row 3 to Row 4.Lay Row 3 down. Flip Row 4 upside down on top of it, with right sides together and all edges lined up. The heart point should be facing UP as you look at it. Sew along the bottom edge with a 1/4" seam. Press seam towards bottom.

Now sew the last two units together. Place the block's top half down. Flip the bottom half on top of it, right sides together and all edges lined up. The point of the heart should again be facing UP at this point. Sew along the bottom edge with a 1/4" seam. Press seam towards the top. All done!! Good Job!
