** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Using the template provided cut four pentagons from the Color 1  11-1/2" square...
Mark and cut the Color 2  2-7/8" x 11-1/2" strip into four 2-7/8" squares. Stack these and cut them once on the diagonal to make eight half square triangles. Cut the Color 2  3-7/8 x 7-3/4" strip into two 3-7/8" squares. Stack these and cut once on the diagonal to make four half square triangles is...

Sew a 3-7/8" half square triangle to the upper left hand side of a Color 1 pentagon, using a scant 1/4" seam allowance. Press seam towards triangle. Add small half square triangles to the adjacent two sides of the pentagon, using the same seam allowance, and pressing towards triangles. Make four units like this...

Lay out the four units as shown at left and sew two horizontal rows, pressing row seams in alternating directions. Join the rows and one Hard Times Block is done! ...on to Page 2!
