This makes a 12" block and is from the 1930's !

** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block ** 

Start by marking and cutting the Color 1 3-1/2" x 14" strip into four 3-1/2" squares...

Next cut the Color 2  3-1/2" x 7" strip into two 3-1/2" squares...

 Cut the Color 4  3-1/2" x 8" rectangle into four 3-1/2" x  2" rectangles...

Now sew the Color 3 and Color 5  2" x 16" strips right sides together along one long edge in a scant 1/4" seam. Press to the darker side. Cut this pieced strip at 2" intervals to get eight pieced units. Sew pairs of them together to make four Four Patch units...

To construct the A Corners of the block, sew together pairs of Color 1 squares and small Four Patch units. Make two units like this. These should measure 6-1/2". Trim if needed...

Now sew Color 3  2" x 8" strips to the top and bottom of a Color 4  3-1/2" x 8" rectangle. Press seams to center. Cut this at 2" intervals to get four pieced units...

To construct the B Corners of the block, sew the Color 4  3-1/2" x  2" rectangles to the left and right of the Color 2 squares. Press seams to outside. Add the pieced strips from the step above to the top and bottom. Make two units like this. These should measure 6-1/2". Trim if needed...on to Page 2!
