Fat Quarters will be ample!

The first thing that I would recommend that you do, is go to the Practice Paper Piecing Page.  When you feel comfy with paper piecing, come on back and try an Exploding Star Block! You will need to print out two copies of the template A page, and one of the B +C pages per block you want to make on very lightweight paper. You will also need four 2-1/2" corner squares.

After all units are paper pieced, sew together the template B page units to make the block's center top and bottom rows. Sew template B and template C units to complete the block's center. Sew 2-1/2" corner squares to the ends of two template A page units. Sew the remaining template A page units to the sides of the block's center unit. Add the top and bottom rows to finish this block!

Here are four blocks by five with triple plain borders!
