This makes a 12" block and is part paper piecing! It's a Circa 1900's block, named after the well-loved wife of President James Madison

The first thing that I would recommend that you do, is go to the Practice Paper Piecing Page.  When you feel comfy with paper piecing, come on back and try a Dolly Madison Star block! You will need to print out three copies of the template page per block you want to make on very lightweight paper. Fat Quarters should be plenty...maybe a bit more of the background...

Mark and cut the Color 2  4-1/2" x 18" strip into four 4-1/2" squares...

Cut the Color 2  5-1/4" square into four quarter square triangles as shown at left...

Sew the 1-7/8" Color 1 and Color 2 squares together to make a nine patch as shown at left. Trim this back to measure 4-1/2" if needed...

After your units are paper pieced, sew them together as shown at left. (also using a Color 2 quarter square triangle)  Make four units like this. Trim these back to measure 4-1/2" if needed...

Piece the block as shown at left! Make three horizontal rows, pressing seams in alternating directions by row...then join the rows, and it's a done deal! ...on to Page 2!
