This makes a 16" block! It's from the late 1800's-early1900's, and makes a wonderful block to showcase a special fabric or motif!

** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block ** 

Start by cutting the Color 2  6" x 14-1/2" strip into four 1-1/2" x 14-1/2" strips. Cut the Color 2  3" x 16-1/2" strip into two 1-1/2" x 16-1/2" strips. Cut the Color 2  3" x 15" strip into six 1-1/2" x 5" strips. Cut the Color 2  1-1/2" x 17" strip into two 1-1/2" x 8-1/2" strips...

Mark and cut the Color 3 and Color 4  2-1/2" x 20" strips into four 2-1/2" x 5" rectangles...

Using a scant 1/4" seam, sew together one of each of the two strip sets as shown at left. Press seams towards darker fabric. Cut each in half at the 2-1/2" point... 

To build the block, sew a Color 2  1-1/2" x 8-1/2" strip to the right and left of the center 8-1/2" square. Add a short Color2/3/4 strip set to the right and left of those. Press seams towards the Color 2 strips...
