** Preparing the Pieces
and Sewing the Block ** |
|

Start by marking and cutting the Color 1 2-7/8"
x 11-1/2" strip into four 2-7/8" squares. Stack and cut these in
half along one diagonal to make eight half square triangles...

|
Next mark and cut the Color
2 2-1/2" x 10" strip into four 2-1/2"
squares... |
|
|
Cut the Color 3 4-7/8" x 9-3/4" strip into two 4-7/8"
squares. Stack and cut these along one diagonal to make four
half square triangles... |
|
|
Now speed piece the quarter
square triangle units, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 2
5-1/4" x 10-1/2" strips right sides together and all edges
aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 5-1/4"
square lines, then mark in the diagonals as shown above. Sew a
scant 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at
the square lines. Cut these apart on the square lines and on the
diagonal lines between the rows of stitching. Don't press them open
yet! With them still flat, the way you just cut them, align a ruler
from corner to corner, and cut on the OTHER diagonal. This will give
you eight quarter square triangles. Press seams towards darker fabric. Sew pairs together, and
trim to be 4-1/2" if needed...on
