** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

First cut the Color 1  3-7/8" x 23-1/4" strip into six 3-7/8" squares...

Now cut the Color 2  3-7/8" x 15-1/2" strip into four 3-7/8" squares...

Then cut the Color 3  5" x 33" strip into sixteen 2-1/2" x 3-1/2" rectangles and four 2-1/2" squares...

Next cut the Color 4  3-7/8" x 23-1/4" strip into six 3-7/8" squares...

To piece the half squares, pair up 3-7/8" squares right sides together and edges aligned. ( I show them staggered here just so you can see I am working with two squares) On the back of the top square lightly draw in the diagonal, then stitch a scant 1/4" away on each side of the line. Cut apart ON the drawn line to get two half squares. Trim these to measure 3-1/2" if needed.

{Pair four Color 1sq with four Color 4sq to make eight of those half squares. Pair two Color 1sq with two Color 2sq to make four of those. Pair two Color 2sq with two Color 4sq to make four of those}

Now lay out half squares, rectangles, and small squares as shown at left. Using a scant 1/4" seam allowance sew together three rows. Press the top and bottom row seams to the center and the middle row seam to the outside. Join the rows to complete one quarter of the block. This should measure 8-1/2". Make three more like this!...
