** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by marking and cutting the Color 1  3" x 12" strip into sixteen 1-1/2" squares...

Now mark and cut the Color 2  3" x 13" strip into four 1-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangles. Cut the Color 2  7-1/2" square into nine 2-1/2" squares...

Place a Color 1 square right sides together and outside edges aligned with one corner of a Color 2 square. On the back of the small square draw in the diagonal and sew on this drawn line. Repeat with another Color 1 square on the opposite corner. Trim off the excess seam allowance leaving 1/4". Press to darker side. Make five units like this. Trim four of them to measure 2-1/2" square...

On one of the units we just made sew Color 1 squares to the adjacent corners also, again cutting off the excess seam allowances, and pressing the remainder to the darker side. Trim to measure 2-1/2" square...

Sew the remaining Color 1 squares to each end of two Color 2 rectangles in a scant 1/4" seam. Press to dark sides...

Lay out the block's center units as shown at left. Sew in three horizontal rows, pressing the row seams in alternating directions. Join the rows...
