** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by marking and cutting the Color 1  3-1/2" x 14" strip into four 3-1/2" squares...

Next mark and cut the Color 2  2-1/2" x 20" strip into eight 2-1/2" squares...

Then mark and cut the Color 2  2-1/2" x 18" strip into four 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles...

Now mark and cut the Color 2  6-1/2" x 32-1/2" strip into five 6-1/2" squares...

Speed piece the quarter square triangles by stacking the Color 1 and Color 2  3-1/4" x 6-1/2" strips right sides together. On the back of the top strip lightly mark the diagonals as shown at left. Mark the 3-1/4" square line as well. Sew a SCANT 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square line. Cut these apart on the square line. Using a small ruler and rotary cutter, cut through each square in the opposite direction from that in which you just sewed. Each square will give you two quarter square triangles. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabrics..

To speed piece the half square, stack the Color 1 and Color 2  2-7/8" x 23" strips right sides together, and mark the diagonals as in the step above. Marl the 2-7/8" square lines as well. Sew a SCANT 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Cut apart on the square lines, and on the marked diagonals between the rows of stitching. This will give you sixteen half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabrics...
