Now make two units as shown at left, using four half squares in each unit. Trim these units to measure 4-1/2" if needed...

 

 

Make one unit as shown at left using half squares and the two Color 2  2-1/2" squares. Trim this unit to measure 4-1/2" if needed...

 

Now place a Color 1  2-1/2" square right sides together and outside edges aligned with one corner of a Color 2  4-1/2" square. On the back of the top strip lightly mark the diagonal in the direction shown at left. Sew ON this drawn line. Cut off the excess seam allowance, Pressing the remainder towards the darker side. Make two units like this. Trim these units to measure 4-1/2" if needed...

 

 

Sew the two tiny Color 2 triangles to the left and right of the trunk unit in scant 1/4" seam allowances. Press seams towards trunk. Add a Color 1 half square triangle, again using a scant 1/4" seam. Press seam towards newly added triangle. Trim this unit to measure 4-1/2" if needed...

 

 

 

Now lay out all the units as shown at left. Sew three horizontal rows of units. Join the rows and the block is done!
