** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by marking and cutting the three Color 1 1-1/2" x 10-1/2" strips into seven 1-1/2" squares  each...

Then mark and cut the Color 2  1-1/2" x 12" strip into eight 1-1/2" squares...

Next mark and cut the Color 2  3-1/2" x 14" strip into four 3-1/2" squares...

Now speed piece the half squares by stacking the Color 1 and Color 2  1-7/8" x 15" strips right sides together and all edges aligned. ON the back of the top strip draw in the 1-7/8" square lines. Draw in the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew a SCANT 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Cut apart on the square lines and on the marked diagonals between the rows of stitching. This will give you sixteen half squares. Press seams towards darker fabric. Trim them back to measure 1-1/2" if needed...

Sew the center nine patch (chain unit) by making three rows of color 1 and 2 squares as shown at left. Use all SCANT 1/4" seams, and alternate pressing direction by row. Trim this back to measure 3-1/2" if needed...

Then sew the "ball units" as shown at left, using Color 1 and 2 squares plus corner half squares. Again sew SCANT 1/4" seams, and alternate pressing direction by row. Make four units like this. These can also be trimmed back to measure 3-1/2" if needed...on to Page 2!
