** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by cutting the Color 3  2-1/2" x 10" strip into four 2-1/2" squares for the block's outer corners...

Next cut the Color 3  2-1/2" x 18" strip into four 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles...

Then cut the Color 1 and Color 3  2-7/8" x 28-3/4" strips into ten 2-7/8" squares of each...

Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 3  2-7/8" squares right sides together in pairs with all edges aligned. On the back of the top squares, lightly mark the diagonals as shown at left with a solid line corner to corner. Now sew a scant 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals. Cut apart ON the marked diagonals between the lines of stitching. Each pair will give you two half squares. You need 20 in total. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. Trim these back to measure 2-1/2" if needed...

Sew trimmed half square units together, using a scant 1/4" seam allowance (now and throughout the block making!) to make four of the units shown at top left. Add Color 3  2-1/2" squares to the ends of TWO of those half square units...on to Page 2!
